![]() how could it be changed to remove the bad elements, and still retain those benefits? It references an actual real- world occult tradition. It allows you to roleplay as someone who uses mechanical theory to enhance magic. It rewards investment in an under-used skill. It provides a benefit to non-int casters who DIDN'T dump intelligence. Heck, it's one of the few things in the game that make any use of Knowledge engineering, as most campaigns don't feature robots or technological items. It's one of the few feats requiring investment in Knowledge (engineering). Whilst the feat has major problems, I think there are good reasons for it to exist. They are professionals, they do this for a living. maybe it should simply be banned? Perhaps Paizo was mistaken in making it. It (allegedly) can cause balance issues at higher levels (I've never played with this feat at higher levels, nor have any of the people I've discussed it with, so that's purely theoretical). It breaks one of the key guidelines for RPG design (requiring a player to have a particular skill -arithmetic- IRL, in order to RP as having it). It's one of the most controversial, oft-banned feats in Pathfinder 1st Edition.
